Part II: Another Q&A with WordPlay T. Jay
Every few weeks, WordPlay T. Jay makes an effort to go through his YouTube comments and answer any questions users may have.
In this two-week Q&A series, he is answering the latest batch.
Going forward, to get quicker answers to your questions, you can text T. Jay at 253-300-0702 and put “Q” at the start of the text so he knows it’s a question.
This week’s questions and answers are:
Q: Junior Dunkley clowned, “Stop blaming Spotify you need to improve your skills either you get with the programme or don't give up the day job.” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uAIBjF2fAL0)
A: Kinda what I said, but with more REAL TALK!
Q: Ruiv Records asked, “Can we register our song on BMI as a song writer if our song beat is not exclusive or taken from YouTube as free for non profit project?” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1HJHFTiEF7s&t=4s)
A: Yes you can register the song, because at the least the LYRICS are original & the performance of the master recording is for you to claim. Just make sure you give credit to the producer and reach out to get them listed on the registration.
Q: Loki Ojha asked, “brother i need your help and guidance please google me as Loki Ojha and connect with me.” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=angcWvynwI0&t=1s)
A: Like I tell a lot of people - hit me up in the email or text : wptj@otmmg.com or 253-300-0702
Q: STEELO asked, “what do you do moving forward to prevent this from happening again?” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZrQGCSDMrq4)
A: The best thing to do is either change your name or reach out to your distributor to make sure your ARTIST ID is different on every retailer. That's the best move.
Q: Karmin Kapri asked, “How do you link artist profile to stories through Distrokid?” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHzQO1itfqc)
A: I have no idea, that's a Facebook/Instagram secret I believe...so they are working with distributors to figure this out.
Q: AllOZA16 asked, “Do i need songtrust if i am registered as a publisher on ASCAP? Appreciate your work.” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1HJHFTiEF7s&t=4s)
A: No one needs a publishing administrator. Their role is to help you register with ALL societies you need to without having to register every song yourself. If you have the ability to do it all yourself...Skip the pub administrator.
Q: FK Scottie asked, “I been trying to get the OAC i got a topic channel but when ever I email YouTube they say they currently work with channels that are part of the youtube partner program and i got some friends who got it Easy just by emailing youtube can you help me out.” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1HJHFTiEF7s&t=4s)
A: A lot of distributors are starting to handle this for artists. Ask your distributor about an Official Artist Channel. The program has changed because...well probably because I had a video go up telling everyone to email youtube...they probably got tired of that!
Q: Tayler Chantel asked, “Hey ! I have a question what about if I’m responsible for the lyrics but I’m giving credit to someone else for the beat? How would I do it then?” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hiTNeRVRDxM&t=1s)
Extra Stuff replied, “You put the part they did under the section that shows you don't own it.”
A: Extra stuff is right. You have to list the beatmaker as an owner as well for the music portion. Register yourself as the lyric portion, but you will own the certificate. UNLESS you bought the beat exclusively and it's contracted to you ONLY.
Q: MasterFonso said, “Big bro T.Jay this has been very informative and helpful for real. I love your honesty too! Definitely got a new sub! Thank you! (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8qpDLb0E85k&t=2s)
A: Thanks for the sub!
