Extra, extra: A WordPlay T. Jay news update
People count on all kinds of sources for their news, and this week, WordPlay T. Jay is breaking down a few headlines.
For one, Dr. Dre is back home after suffering a brain aneurysm. T. Jay thinks it may have been caused by stress, but no cause is confirmed. The event does raise some hard-hitting questions, though.
“Can you imagine actually forgetting about Dre?” T. Jay asked. “Maybe this will be Dre’s encouragement to release The Detox.”
On the concert front, Dr. Anthony Fauci has said the U.S. isn’t anywhere close to having large-scale live performances yet, as about 70 percent of the population needs vaccinating first.
According to T. Jay’s “quick maths” that’s about 245 million people.
“I think we will be in this for a long time,” he said.
Wrapping up the week in news, people online are expressing some displeasure with Timbaland over sampling. People on Twitter accused him of “stealing” samples for some of his biggest hits, which flies in the face of Hip Hop as a genre.
“Everything in Hip Hop is sampled because that’s the basis of the genre,” T. Jay said. “Back in the Bronx in New York, people threw a party one day and found some records. They spun those records to a break beat, then someone got on the mic and entertained, and Hip Hop was born. The whole idea came from sampling.”
T. Jay added many other genres, like country, R&B, jazz and more, all employ sampling at times.
Sampling is also in the film industry, as many movies are adaptations of old plays, especially Shakespeare.
