The Road to Terry - 040 - PTSD from Slavery
I’ve been thinking about my own journey through therapy but that leads me to question about this nation. Why can’t we admit that black folx experience PTSD from slavery even today?
PTSD can be passed down for several generations if it’s unchecked. It is definitely unchecked in our society. It’s also undiagnosed as a remnant of slavery. Ask yourself. How are you coping with your trauma from just this lifetime? Are you free of the pains of parental neglect, sexual abuse, or societal issues? Of course you aren’t. Why would you think that black people should just “get over it” then? 400 years of trauma is still echoing through our communities. We haven’t recovered yet even though emancipation happened.
Remember Jim Crow came next. The fight for Civil Rights came after. Police brutality and poverty still stands today. We haven’t had a shot at recovering.
We’re forgotten but September 11th is a requirement to remember. The Holocaust is necessary to keep on our minds. Pearl Harbor will never be just a memory. Covid-19 is creating more souls to consider. All of those things should be recalled. Yet, we should get over slavery? We haven’t had a chance to.
Therefore, it requires this nation and the people in it to really examine how to get that done.
